Broken

"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." Psalm 51:17

I have come across many people in my life who are at their wits end, have been through the fire, or have experienced great heartbreak. I was going through a book entitled, "Trusting God Even When It Hurts" in our Freedom That Last ministry when I came across a friend who was going through the fire in his own personal life. He had made some choices in his life that caused him to be in this position, but it did not deter the fact that he was hurting and broken. I don’t think I’ve ever known someone so broken and hurt in my life, and my own heart hurt for my friend. I wished I could turn the clock back for him so that he could make different decisions, but time belongs to God and God alone.

I had never seen my friend cry so much, and I could feel his pain radiating from him. He started to attend our Friday night Bible study, and he struggled to even get through the first part of the night. Eventually, he would make it past the singing only to leave during the middle of our group time. He would text me later and apologize, explaining it hurt too bad for him to stay. I could not fully understand where he was coming from, but it was undeniable the pain that he was going through. He was faithful in his attendance on Friday nights, and he started to grow spiritually. Finally, was able to stay the whole time and was one of the last people to leave. He had a love for the ministry and he even began to lead the beginning of our program when I had to work late. His tears and heartache turned to praise to God, and I saw God drawing him close to Himself.

My friend was broken before God, and was repentant of what he had done and his estranged relationship from God. He had spent time away from God, but he was now back and wanting to feel the closeness he once had with his Father. I realized God was changing his life because he was broken and remorseful for what he had done. His tears were so numerous they could not be counted, but God knew. It is amazing the work God can do in our lives if we will come to Him with a broken heart and a broken spirit. God will reject the proud, but He will never turn away those that are remorseful and seek to return back to Him. God has a way of breaking a person who will not humble themselves before Him, and in the end, all knees will bow before a holy God. It is better to humble yourself first before being forced to do so by a holy God.

Where are you today friend? Are you living in known sin and ignoring the presence of a Holy God? Are you running from Him, only to realize you cannot outrun the presence of God? What will it take in your life to break you? May we humble ourselves before our God and make things right today and avoid the heartbreak that sins brings. Today is the day to be broken before God, and today is the day to run back to the One you left. He will not despise you if you have a broken spirit, but He will welcome you back with open arms. What will it be? Will you find peace and rest in Him today, or will you continue in your sin? Choose wisely and know that He is waiting for you.

Stay in the fight!
