Care To Play Telephone?

Updated: Jun 7, 2021

But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.” I Thessalonians 4:9-12

I remember my old pastor used to always say, “Clean up under your own doorstep.” We are sometimes apt to be involved in things that are none of our business and we tend to make matters worse. Our spirit is noisy and we rock a boat that is already rocking quite well on its own. We fail to yield the evidence of studying to be quiet and minding our own business.

I recall my seventh-grade year in school and trying to win a girl I had a crush on since kindergarten. I asked for her number on the first day of kindergarten never really intending to call her. I put her number under my pillow as I took my nap and I slept quite well. My crush never liked me but she started to like my cousin at the end of our sixth-grade year. I was disappointed by her selection, and I thought of ways to get her to like me. I overheard her say something and I sought to use it against her. I ran and told my cousin and played it up to my advantage. I started to play a three-person game of telephone and my plan worked brilliantly. My cousin and his girlfriend were on the verge of a break up and I smiled ear to ear.

My cousin soon became wise to my plan and was quite upset with me. I realized how selfish I was in the whole thing, and I had to come clean to my crush and my cousin. They soon made up and looked ready to stone me as I was the cause of the uproar. I realized the power one could have when one seeks to meddle in things that is not their business. My plan worked just as I planned but I did not foresee all the trouble my plan would cause.

As Christians we are to have a calming influence in adverse situations and to be of a quiet temper.  Our behavior towards situations should always be of a peaceable and quiet spirit. We all have been approached with situations where drama is about to start and we have the power stop it or promote it. Reality television is full of drama, but our lives as Christians should not be. We should be dwelling on things that please God and not be active participants in sowing discord among the brethren.

Where are you today friend? Does your life revolve around drama? Are you the spreader of gossip or are you known for nipping gossip in the bud? Is your soul noisy or are you at rest and studying to be quiet? Quietness is a skill we can all work on as we live in a very busy and noisy world. Our mindset should always be, “Speak for the servant listeneth.” It is hard to hear if we are always speaking and looking to other sources for answers. May we mind our own business and end drama instead of promoting it. May we love one another enough that we would dare not speak an ill word of one another in gossip or in a first-hand discussion. Telephone is a game that is cute to play but it is not one we should play outside of that. Study to be quiet and always be waiting for what God has to say as opposed to those who are attempting to make your soul noisy.
