Dead Battery

"And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:" 2 Corinthians 9:8

I recently attended a morning meeting that wrapped up earlier than expected. I was scheduled to meet my mom for breakfast afterwards, so I had an hour or so to kill before I had to meet her. I decided to take my car to the local car wash which was only about 1,000 feet away from the meeting place. I pulled in there hoping to clean the interior first and then take it though the car wash. I played the The Abundant Life podcast while I vacuumed the car as I knew it would take me about 15-20 minutes. I was in the middle of listening when my car abruptly turned off and the podcast quit playing over the speakers. I thought nothing of this until I was done vacuuming and wanted to drive it through the wash.

I got into my car and pushed the button to start it, but it simply did nothing and the battery icon flashed on my dash. I thought there was no way I could have killed my battery in such a short time but here we were. In the old days you could pop the clutch, but the red button that said "START" mocked me as I pushed it to no avail. I looked around to see if anybody could help me, but it was pretty slim pickings in the area. I was not too sure what to do, but I have a good friend who lives fairly close to where I was, so I gave him a call to see if he could give me a jump.

He drove over to the car wash to help me and my car roared back to life with the little battery device he had hooked up to it. He was also perplexed by the car not starting and advised it should not have died with the radio playing for only 20 minutes. My friend left me with the battery device just in case, and I had to use it at least ten more times to get my battery started again over the next several weeks. I finally realized that my battery was not good, and I was grateful it was under warranty and was replaced free of charge. I realized that my car is really not good for anything when my battery does not work. The red start button meant very little, and it only came to life when my battery was active and good. The red button was a car ornament at best, but it became a powerful tool once the battery was replaced.

The Christian life is much the same way as we can do nothing without the grace of God in our lives. Grace serves as the battery to activate us to do what God has commanded us to do. John 15:5 states, "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." God's grace is the divine help He gives us in order to do His will. His grace is the batteries we need in order to live the life of holiness He has called us to live. Without His grace, we are like my car with a pretty red button, but no power to start the car and go anywhere. I could have sat at the car wash all day if it was not for the charge that my battery was given in order to move the car from point A to point B. God has made us to need His grace, and if we do not partake of His grace, we will not be able to abound to every good work He has called us to.

Where are you friend? Is your battery dead? Are you in need of a jump of grace? Are you trying to push the red button without His grace and having no luck trying to do things in your own strength and will? Do you need to humble yourself and obtain more of His grace? 1 Peter 5:5b states, "For God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble." God gives His grace (help) to those who humble themselves before Him, to those who will ask for God's help, and to those who will confess their sins before Him and be willing to repent of the sins that beset them. Will you ask for God's grace or will you continue to try and live the Christian life on a dead battery? May we call out to Him and ask for help, and may we be humble before Him and run on the grace He so freely gives.
