The Fares of The World

It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” II Timothy 2:11-13

I think of the fall time and it reminds of cooler weather and the Arizona State Fair. I always loved to go to the fair as a kid, and it still holds a warm place in my heart. I will say that the fair is the worst place to adhere to a diet of any kind as the options there would not be listed on a Weight Watcher's guide to success. The bright lights beckon you to explore unhealthy food options that draw you in like a bug attracted to the light in the dark of night. At the fair, you can sample deep fried butter or a powdered sugar-laced funnel cake. I particularly love the haystack of fries that are sprinkled with salt and are hot and greasy which I am sure takes years off of my life. I hate to share the fry stack with anyone else, but it is so large that I must.

The fair is an example to me of the allures of the flesh and the draw of the world. The world comes at you with flashing lights and enticing smells. You are promised to see a two-headed snake while devouring a corn dog doused in mustard. Although it all sounds fun, you pay the price with your stomach expanding and your wallet shrinking.

The world is often the same way as it promises fun and adventure but leads you to hollowness and despair. We must die to the world just as He did. He was tempted, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15 states, "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." If we spurn the sin that would draw us away then we live unto Him. We must reject the shining lights of sin and the deep fried allure the Devil throws our way. The world, just as the fair, is fun for a season but its pleasures are not worth the separation from our God. God is ever faithful no matter how far we stray, and His arms are open, awaiting our return to Him. It is impossible for God to deny Himself as the earth would cry out that He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. Matthew Henry states, “He is faithful to his threatenings, and faithful to his promises. This truth makes sure the unbeliever’s condemnation, and the believer’s salvation.”

Do you deny the One who created you for the approval of a world that does not care about you? Are you indulging in the pleasures (sin) of this world or do you die to those things that would detract you from your walk with God? Oh that would we come to know the joy of walking with Him and living unto Him. The pleasures of this world have only caused me heartache and pain, but there is nothing in this world that compares to walking with my God. Will you deny the One who loves you or will you desire to be dead with Him, so that you might live with Him? May we be attracted to the Son who is the light of the world and not the blinking lights which will soon burn fade away.
