“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, ” II Timothy 1:9
I remember my freshman year in high school, and I was big into soccer. I was playing club soccer many months out of the year, so I decided to not play basketball. Basketball used to be my first love, but I was growing to love soccer even more. I walked past the high school basketball coach and he smirked at me and said, ”You couldn't handle the running in my practices.” I smirked back and said, “I will run circles around you.” He challenged me to attend the first practice, and I gladly accepted the challenge.
I showed up for basketball practice and the coach was frustrated that he could not wear me out. I was in great shape and I essentially joined the team. I had lost my shooting touch at that point, but I still loved to shoot. I was put into the game for one sole purpose, and it was not to do what I liked best. My sole purpose was to defend their best ball handler and make life miserable for him. I was told not to shoot the ball unless it was a lay up from a steal. Their best player would start to heat up and my name would be called. I would go in the game, and run like a chicken with its head cut off. I would pester the other team and give an occasional hard foul if it was warranted. My only shot was a lay up and I knew my purpose and role on the team. I knew If I wanted to play then I had to adhere to my role. I took pride in my role, and I have worked on my shot ever since being told to not shoot the ball.
As Christians, we are called to a purpose and role in the body of Christ. We are not called to do our own thing and please ourselves, but we are called with a holy calling. We are called to a higher purpose and an eternal goal. We are not here to fulfill our own ambitions and dreams, but we are called according to His purpose and will. We are bought with a price and we are not our own. We will only truly have true happiness and joy when walking in His will and His purpose for our life. We must not grow weary in the work He has called us to and we must press on toward His calling. I think of how special it is to be created with a purpose before the world even began. To be created to serve Him in the year 2019 and to be involved in His work and His calling. What a God we serve!
Do you live life with your own purpose in mind or do you seek God’s will? Do you realize you were created with purpose and that God’s work is big business? Are you actively working so you are ready when He calls you into the game? Do you realize the plans He has for you in Christ Jesus? May we come to find our purpose and fulfillment in Him and may we seek the things that are eternal. May we never forget that we are in the Lord’s army, and we are employed in His service. May we be found busy doing His work, and may we fulfill His purpose for our lives.
Stay in the fight!
