“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” I John 5:11-13
We live in a world in which we demand guarantees. We want the assurance that what we buy has a lasting warranty, and we want to know that we will not be out of our hard earned money. I have a filing cabinet in which I keep all my warranties (at least the old school paper warranties), just in case I ever need them. I've gone to that filing cabinet several times and was able to redeem a warranty when items I had bought broke down or did not perform as guaranteed.
The older I get, the more I value warranties and the more I examine their fine print. I have been duped a time or two with a warranty that pretty much excluded every possible breakdown in the fine print. Although I have come to value warranties on these temporary possessions, there is no warranty greater than that of eternal life. I have wrestled with this guarantee many times in my life, and I have doubted whether or not I could truly have eternal security. It seemed the more sin I committed, the more I questioned my eternal security. The more I sought my own way, the more distant God seemed to be. I would hear the whispers of Satan and he would try to poke holes in my eternal security. Sin in my life brought about guilt, worry and doubts. I knew the promises of God, but the whispers of Satan seemed to drown them out.
I am grateful for this verse and the record God has given us about our eternal “guarantee”. Our eternal security is the most important guarantee we can have in our life. The guarantee God gives us is the record of God offering eternal life through His Son. The record is meant to give those who believe on His Son eternal hope and security. It is a record written in the book of life and one that is not forgotten. There is no fine print attached and the record is not difficult to understand. If you have the Son, then you have eternal life. If you don’t have the Son, then you don’t have eternal life. God's guarantee is not based on us keeping a warranty in a filing cabinet or good works in our "bank", but it is based on the finished work of His Son, Jesus.
Where do you stand friend? Do you have the Son or have you rejected Him? Is your name written in the Book of Life or are you still betting on your good works? May today be the day you accept Him as your Lord and Savior and may today be the day you rest in His eternal security. If you've never accepted Jesus, then please take the time to read how you can and reach out to me if you have any questions.
How about you Christian? Has sin caused you to question your salvation? Do you believe the record God has given or are you plagued with doubt? John 10:28-29 states, ”And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.” Will you take God at His Word? If you have accepted Him, will you accept His eternal security? May we not base our eternal security on our feelings, but may we base it on the promises and truth of God’s Word.
Stay in the fight!
