Faith Is The Victory!

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” I John 5:4-5

In the summer of 1996, I lived in Chicago but was visiting family in Phoenix, and was quickly reminded of the the harsh desert sun. I went to my older cousin's apartment to do what many Arizonans do in the summer - swimming. We began horse playing in the pool and even got into a crazy game of tackle football. My older cousin was bigger than all of us, but not swift of foot. The key was to stay away from him or you would end up paying the price. I did my best to run away from him, at least as much as you can in a pool, but there were times when a clash was inevitable.

My older cousin was having a great time as he was destroying all of us and bragging to his young son who was watching the rowdiness from the comfort of a pool chair. This kid was laughing at us as we faced the wrath of Khan until we challenged him to get off the chair and into the pool. We were excited as it would now be our turn to give him a pounding. He was only about 10 years old and wanted no part of it. Finally, his dad challenged him words that seemed to echo throughout the complex, “Your cousins are watching - get in the pool!” He ran from his chair, jumped into the pool and promptly joined his dad's team. He no longer had fear as he knew his dad would protect him.

My little cousin finally answered our call, not only because his pride was challenged, but he knew he would have great success on his dad's team. He took his scrapes along the way, but generally came out of the fracas unscathed. Our faith is often the same way as we are challenged moment by moment by our adversary, Satan, and at times he looks like a foe who cannot lose. We are scared to jump into the pool of faith as we fear getting beat up by the devil. We forget Who is on our team and we forget the end of the story as told in Revelation. We live as though we are defeated, and we forget that our faith is the victory that will overcome the evil in this world. We have a formidable foe, but we must follow the example of Jesus who walked the earth without sin. Death could not hold Him as I Corinthians 15:55 states,O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

Are you following Jesus' example? Do you realize what you have in your faith? Do you realize the victory He has already won for you? Have you come to realize that the only way to overcome this world is through your Christian faith? Are you still playing on the losing team or have you come to realize that true victory is through Jesus Christ? May we follow Christ’s example and renounce the world and not allow the world to overcome us.

Stay in the fight!
