God is Always Working

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:28-31

I recall the summer of 1993. We were at church camp, and I was looking forward to my senior year of high school that fall. It was unusual to get calls from home while at the camp, so when my dad called, I figured it must be bad news. He had been told that his work would be shutting down at the end of the year, and if he wanted to stay with the company, he would need to relocate to Chicago. I had lived in Phoenix my whole life, and I did not want to move. As a senior in high school, this was by no means a part of my plan. However, as the year came to a close, I had moved to a place where the cold chilled my bones, and the wind seemed to rip through my whole body. I was forced to leave everything I knew, and I did not see God in any of this!

Little did I know that Chicago would prove to be a new start for me. I began to watch how God worked in our pastor. His prayers seemed to get answered, and he had a tangible walk with the Lord. He took interest in me and advised me that I could also have my prayers answered and enjoy a closer walk with God.

I began to pray, and I watched as God worked in the littlest things—things that were huge to an eighteen-year-old. The Lord began to show me that even in Chicago, He had a plan for me, and was He was slowly teaching me.

I would like to say that I was a spiritual giant and grew in leaps and bounds, but my growth was measured more in centimeters. As I reflect on this time, I realize that this is where my parents’ faith became my faith. I was transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. Yes, it seemed to be a new beginning with everything I believed. Though my life did not always reflect it, God became real to me in those years. I began to see how He had used this time in my life to reveal Himself to me. I began to understand that when He is with me, who can be against me?

I’ve read in the Bible of the trials that so many faced. I hear of the accounts of how God worked in situations that seemed hopeless. I saw firsthand in my own life how God worked and still works in hopeless situations. Where are you today friend? Does your situation seem hopeless? Do you feel like even God could not help you in your plight? May you come to trust that He works all things together for your good and according to His will. May you come to rest in His promises and not wallow in your hopelessness. It may seem like everything is working against you, but “If God be for us, who can be against us?”
