Hate ≠ Light

He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.” I John 2:9

I grew up with one sibling who is six years older than me. I am not sure of my overall record with my sister, but we have engaged in some epic battles. I rebelled against her and we sometimes came to fisticuffs. My sister was not much of a fighter, but she did have six years on me and was much smarter. I would easily and often get mad at her, and I only thought with my fists.

I honestly think she studied me as she knew my exact buttons to push, and she always knew the right words to say to me to get a reaction. She would trick me into things and often make a fool out of me. Although I would physically fight back with her, there was something in my arsenal that I knew could hurt her more than my fists. I would sometimes be blinded by anger and utter words I could not take back. I would get riled up to the point where I would yell, “I hate you!” The words seemed to hang in the air, and as I much as I tried to collect them back, the words still lingered. I was desperate to have revenge, but I always seemed to go too far. I knew these words cut deep, and I knew there was no coming back once they were uttered.

I love my sister and I am ashamed to reveal that I ever said those words, but my heart can be so dark and wicked. It has been a long time since I have uttered those vicious words, but I know my heart has certainly felt them toward others. "Hate" is a powerful word when used against someone. Although I may have not said the word "hate" to some, my actions towards them were loud and clear. I have looked down on, devalued, and flat out hated people, some even in my own church. I am guilty of not walking in the light due to my attitude of hatred to others.

How about you friend? Do you say you walk in the light but yet hate someone you are commanded to love? Do your thoughts or actions betray your detest of others? Is there someone you need to make things right with? Is there someone you need God's help to love? We are always known by our actions and the words we say, so what do your actions and words say about you? Does the world see the Light through you, or do they see the darkness of your heart? I John 1:7 states, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” Will you walk in the light today as He is in the light or will you continue in darkness? May God help us to love others as He loves us.

Stay in the fight!
