Help Me!

"And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation (meeting), and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them." Numbers 20:6

I am not sure if you’ve had people have an opposing opinion of you, but I have dealt with that a lot of my life. I will say I have not been innocent in it all as I have fanned the flames of opposition. I have held several positions of leadership and not everyone thought I was a great leader. There were some who did not like the way I led, and there were some who did not think I was a leader at all. It is hard being a leader because you are held responsible for the actions of others, and you are depended on to lead by example, direction and vision. It has been said that everything rises and falls on leadership, and this is quite true. If you have poor leadership, it will often lead to horrific results and this is the burden that weighs on every leader.

When I was new to the retail world, I was given the responsibility to lead 22 people. I naively figured everyone would love me, and we would ride into the sunset together and achieve great things. This group was tougher than I thought. My first introduction to the team on my first day did not come with much fanfare, and I was looked up and down much like a Pit Bull looks at an intruder. Things did not get better as I met the entire team, and I could tell this was going to be a tough ordeal. People looked to me for answers and the shrug of the shoulders was unacceptable to them. I was challenged and questioned at every step, and I knew I was not respected by any means. There was no “easy button” to push, and I was up against it and needing help desperately.

I was responsible to lead my team in unloading the truck and stocking the floor. The first truck I ran by myself ended in disaster, and my confidence was at an all-time low. An employee had a seizure in the middle of the truck unload, and that incident set everything back and all my goals were missed for the day. I was criticized for not calling security before calling 9-1-1, which made no sense to me. When the employee who had the seizure fell, one of my employees tried to catch her and ended up hurting her back and missed a lot of work due to it. I was having a rough go of it, and it made me realize I was not going to survive if I did not ask for help. I tried to do everything in my own power, and I was failing miserably. I knew I needed to pray. It is amazing what has to happen in our lives before we realize we need God every moment of our lives.

Moses and Aaron were faced with leading a great nation, but it was not all sunshine and rainbows. The people they led were not always appreciative of their leadership and as recorded in Numbers 20, these leaders were having a bad week. Their sister had recently passed away, and the people wanted to go back to the place where God had led them from. The people saw God do great things, but here they were speaking evil against God's chosen leaders. These men were at the end of their rope and they did what we should all do when faced with a dead end in our life, and anytime for that matter. They fell on their face before God and asked for His direction and guidance. They did not seek the advice of others, but they sought the wisdom and guidance of Almighty God.

You might have had a bad day or had the misfortune of leading ungrateful people, but I am sure there is nothing that compares to trying to lead a million people who are angry with you. What will it take in your life for you to fall on your face before God? Will you do it in the good times and the bad times? Will you seek Him first when things go wrong, or will you look to other remedies and solutions? We often don't realize that He is all we need until He is all we have. May we look to God in the storms of life, and may we never forget that there is not a moment in this life when we do not need Him. He knows us and our situation better than anyone else, so may we seek our Father who is aware of our every need.
