High and Lifted Up

Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.

Hebrews 12:28-29

I have heard the name of God taken lightly, used in swear words, and even heard Him referred to as, ”The big guy upstairs.” I have shamefully taken His name in vain, and I have used His name as a curse word myself. I have heard other Christians take Him lightly, and even heard His name used to manipulate or shame people for one's own purpose. God is to be high and lifted up, and He should be given His rightful place.

I was given the responsibility to lead a teen class when I was barely out of the teen years myself. I was ill-prepared to lead a ministry, but the teens thought I was cool. I often arrived late to Sunday School class, and I was trying to prepare my lesson that morning or while I was teaching it. I read my Bible to check it off my list, and I only prayed when I ate a meal or needed something from God. I was not responsible with what I was given as I should have been, and I did not make the impact that God would have me to make. I did not have a godly fear of service, and I left much on the spiritual service “table”.

I think of the ministries in which God has allowed me to serve in, and I am guilty of not serving God with reverence and godly fear. I have taken my Master for granted, forgetting that I will one day give an account for my actions and responsiiblities He has given me . I sometimes have selfish purposes instead the ones God has called me to. We often look at the “big sins” but we forget the sin of forgetting who our God is. We serve Him with minimal effort and we seek praise from others. Everything we do for Him must come from a heart filled with reverence and godly fear. We cannot play games with Him, and we can’t hope to flatter Him with our big Bible and nice suit and dress clothes.

What is your view of God? Do you serve Him with reverence and a godly fear? Do you realize He sees through our shallowness and our own vain pursuits? Do you take Him lightly or do you realize He is the Kings of Kings? God is able to put us in our place when we lose sight of who He is. God said that in the end, “Every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”  May we serve Him now out of reverence for our God, is a consuming fire.
