Hold To The Truth
“Prove (test) all things; hold fast that which is good.” I Thessalonians 5:21
Many of us have heard the statement, “Fake news.” We live in a society in which it is difficult to know what it true and what is false. It used to be that newspapers had to check what they printed and reporters had to verify what they were reporting, but it seems that accountability is a thing of the past. Now, semi-truth passes as absolute truth. And, absolute truth has gone by the wayside as society generally believes that truth is relative and everyone has their own truth.
It would be impossible for me to remember all the lies I have told in my lifetime, and sadly, the lies I still tell today. Lies can come in many forms, but the Bible tells us in Proverbs 6:16-17 that it is sin that God hates, “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,” Since God hates lying, we should hate it as well. Lying should have not have any part in our lives, and we must also guard against lies that we hear and read. Satan’s first tactic against mankind was to deceive and twist what God had said, and he still does that today. John 8:44 states, “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in (does not stand in) the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
Only God’s Word is 100% true. In a world full of lies, dishonesty, deceitfulness, and corruption, God’s Word is the only thing we can rely on for truth. Sadly, we spend more time reading and meditating on things that are not true instead of reading and meditating on God’s Word and His truth. John 17:17 states, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” No life is ever changed for the better with lies, even though it may seem like that at the time. Satan tempted Eve with an attractive lie, the consequences of which forever changed her life and brought destruction upon mankind.
Who are you choosing to believe today? Do you read or watch the news more than you read your Bible? Are you immersed in God’s Word or are you immersed in social media looking for the latest news story? Psalm 119:160 states, “Thy word is true from the beginning (the entirety of Your word is truth): and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.” God’s Word is true from the beginning to the end, and will survive the test of time. May we study the truth, so we are not swayed by the lies of the world. False teaching can even be given through the church, so it is important for us to always test what is said by comparing it to the Word of God. D.L. Moody stated, “The best way to show that a stick is crooked is not to argue about it or to spend time denouncing it, but to lay a straight stick alongside it.” May we test all things against the straight stick of the Bible so that we may be able to discern what is truth and what is a lie. Hold to the truth and never stray from it. God’s Word is truth!
Stay in the fight!
