How Great Thou Art
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are (exist) and were created.“ Revelation 4:11
My wife and I were privileged to get away for a couple of weeks to see Nate and Kate as they were working at a Christian camp for the summer. We wanted to get out of the heat and it was a good way for us to see the kids. We were able to work from a home we had rented nearby which allowed us to attend the nightly services at camp. It was a blessing to be in the camp atmosphere, and I was reminded of how God worked in my own life throughout those tender years. The evangelist who was the camp speaker the first week was someone who worked as a “ranch hand” when I attended camp as a teen. I had not seen him in many years and it was like coming full circle.
The last night of camp was filled with excitement as the weekly competition came to an end and there was a buzz in the air. The doors of the auditorium were wide open and the cool breeze filled the room as rain was slowly falling. The singing was exceptional that night and the voices of the teens and adults filled the room and spilled out of the doors and into the mountain air night. The camp is located on the top of a mountain and surrounded by other mountains in the distance, which is quite breathtaking and the nicest camp I have ever been to. The picturesque beauty of the camp is one-of-a-kind and it is an amazing place to hear the preaching of the Word and to sing praises to the One who created it all.
The last song of the night was “How Great Thou Art", and it seemed so appropriate. I saw God work in the lives of campers that week based on the tears that were shed and the uncomfortableness of the campers as they squirmed in their seats. I joined in the singing and my heart was full with the goodness of God and the greatness of God. I thought about how I had sat in those same camp seats and how God had worked in my own heart. I remember how I sat there with a heart as hard as a rock to start the week, and how the preaching of the Word broke me down by Wednesday. Tears filled my eyes as I thought back to those days and how God brought me to this point in my life.
God has given me a life I could only dream about, a life in which He has given me the opportunity to serve Him. I cannot begin to count the ways God has orchestrated my life and the windows through which He has allowed me to see His greatness. It is not hard to sing of how great God is when you are surrounded by His beauty, but it is something else when you continually experience it firsthand for yourself. I am in awe and wonder everyday He gives me as life is a gift from Him, and I will be in awe and wonder when this life is over. We should never forget how great our God is, and His praise should be on our lips continually. We will praise our God for all eternity, so we should get used to it now on this side of it.
Have you experienced God’s goodness? Have you tasted of His greatness? Do you praise Him as a habit, or does the praising occur few and far between the episodes of life? The greatness of God cannot be denied and there are no words to adequately express it. May we never forget the goodness of our God, and may we be heard by all singing “How Great Thou Art”. To God be all the glory, honor and praise. Amen!
Stay in the fight!
