I Have Nothing To Wear

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.” - I Timothy 6: 6-8

There have been times in my life that I have grown discontent. My focus was off and my eyes were on things that were temporal. I was ungrateful for the things I had, and wanted things I didn’t have, thinking they would make happy. I remember I wanted a new pair of shoes, so I would slow my bike down with the ones I owned. This ingenious plan of mine caused the sole to separate and this made me happy. I brought them to my dad with glee in hopes we would go to the shoe store in search of new shoes. I had the ones I wanted all picked out but my dad went the opposite way of the car. He led me to garage, put glue in my shoes and put them in the vise. My mouth dropped open and my heart sank. My dad became a cobbler and my shoes lasted longer than I anticipated. I was forced to be content with what I had and my hopes for new shoes waned.

In life we tend to focus on things we don’t have as opposed to things that we do. We are bombarded with advertisements that are designed to compel us to purchase things we do not need. We are offered free shipping in 1-2 days and we can order anything we want from the comfort of our couch. We get our eyes on new jobs, cars, clothes, and things that sparkle in the sun. We forget to thank our God for His overwhelming abundance, and we moan and groan along the way.

I think of King Agur in Proverbs who prayed for a middle state - not too much and not too little. He prayed for a state of contentment that we all should pray for. God has given us so much and the more we focus on Him, the less we desire the things we will one day leave behind. I have not gone a day without clothes, and God has bountifully supplied me with food. We live like kings yet still complain because true contentment is only found in God.

Where are you today friend? Have you become discontent with your life? Are you thanking God for all that He has provided? Are you willing to list out all that He has given you? May we not forget the generosity of our LORD who became poor that we might be rich. Will murmuring be on your lips or will your heart abound with praise? May we have a song in our hearts unto the LORD, and may we sing praises unto Him. A grateful heart is a contented one, and one day we will walk on streets of gold. A moving truck never follows a hearse, but a grateful heart we should have for all eternity.
