Keep Quiet!

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25

I don’t remember one time growing up when I was allowed to miss a day of church. If the doors were open, then we were there. I wanted to stay home to watch a Super Bowl or two but my parents were not having it.  My mom took a job which required her to work nights. She would work all night and sleep during the day. She would work Saturday night, go to church in the morning and then come home and try to catch some sleep prior to Sunday evening service. She was dead beat after Sunday morning and would be fast asleep after lunch. She would not allow sleep to get in the way of church, and I admire her for her desire to be in God's house. My sister and I liked several tv shows that started at 6:00pm on Sundays, but we were in church, so we would miss them. We figured out if we would be real quiet, my mom would sleep past her alarm and would not wake up in time for church. We strategically placed pillows by her door so the glow of the television would not wake her up. We giggled quietly as we enjoyed our shows, and we were careful not to be too loud. I would like to say we cared about her sleep, but we were more concerned about our favorite shows.  When we heard my mom rustling about, we quickly removed the pillows and blankets and acted liked we were disappointed that we missed church. My mom would get mad at us, but my sister and I would high five away from my mom’s eyes. We enjoyed these times and thought nothing of this verse as we giggled through our favorite shows.  We often view church as if it is negotiable and pay little attention to what God says about it. Every day we draw closer to God’s coming and even our own mortality. We are called to not forsake assembling with our fellow believers. I have made life-changing decisions in church, and I can say God has used this tremendously in my life. It is hard to encourage a fellow believer if you don’t attend church where your fellow believers would be.  How about you friend? Do you shun church attendance or are you a frequent visitor? Are you faithful in exhorting and encouraging others? Are you seen in your place due to your faithfulness or are you your church’s hide-and-seek champion? May we each find a church body with whom we can worship, serve, and exhort one another. Get to your spot, be faithful, serve and forsake not the assembly.  Stay in the fight!  Saso
