Listen While You Can

See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

Hebrews 12:25

Growing up, I had a second cousin whom I would see on occasion. He was about the same age as I was and lived with his grandma who was my aunt. She did not take any lip, and she was loud enough to hear a mile away. Her voice would carry when she called your name, and when she called your name you were sure to listen. She was certainly not one I wanted to anger, so I tried not to mess up in her presence.

One day my cousin called me outside and he had a plan for us to get into some mischief by taking sodas we were not supposed to have. I was not approving of the plan, and I told him we probably should avoid the stealing the soda, especially since it was my aunt's. I could envision my aunt whipping us when we were caught, and I was trying to avoid that pain on this particular Saturday afternoon. My cousin went ahead with the execution of his plan, and I chose to stay out of it. He was not always the brightest, and I had a feeling he was going to get caught. I warned him not to do it, but he mocked me and did it anyway.

We were out on the carport and my cousin was consuming the stolen goods when we heard my aunt say his name. I am not sure my aunt had an "inside voice" because whenever she spoke, her voice reverberated off every surface in the room. I jumped out of my skin when I heard her call his name, and he quickly finished off the soda.  He told me to lie for him and was sharing with me some ideas for a good lie to tell my aunt. I looked around and noticed the kitchen window was wide open. I frantically used hand signals to get him to quit talking, but he walked closer to the window and his voice grew louder. He was upset that I kept shaking my head at him, and he continued on with the planning of his lie out loud.

I looked behind my cousin and my aunt was standing directly behind him.  Fire was coming out of her ears and she yelled my cousin’s name.  We both jumped and she took him inside the house. His britches got worn out, and I avoided both of them the rest of the day.  I felt bad for my cousin but I was glad my backside went unscathed.

God is always speaking to us, and He has warned us about the sin of unbelief. He warns us of the consequences when we choose not to listen to Him.  My cousin ignored logic and reasoning that Saturday afternoon, and I have done the same thing many times myself.

Where are you today? Are you listening to the One who speaks from heaven or you choosing to go your own way? Do you think heaven and hell are a fairy tale, or you heeding to the voice of God? We are foolish to think we will escape the judgement of God, so may we listen while we still can. God is speaking, so will you be wise enough to hear him now? Let's not just be hearers of the Word, but also doers of the Word.
