Love Glow

"And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables (tablets) the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables (tablets) of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not (did not know) that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh (near) him." Exodus 34:28-30

I recall the first time I saw Rebekah (now my wife) walk into my school homeroom. As she walked in, she had a glow and I was mesmerized by her beauty. The glow was really the bright morning sun shining behind her in still-hot September. I knew I had to get to know her, and her blue eyes, blonde hair, and personal sunshine spotlight had quite the effect on me. The glow wore off though, especially when I realized she was a rule follower and acted like one of the Sun City volunteer sheriff's posse.

Time went on and I had a dream about Rebekah that made her face shine to me once again. We started "dating" in the last month of that school year, and I woke up every morning excited to get to school to see her. I was floating on cloud nine, and I was eager to know better the girl I had both teased and ignored all school year. I thought we would have nothing to talk about, but we talked like we were old friends. I was allowed to call Rebekah, but since she was part of a large family, she was limited to only ten minutes on the phone per day, and the ten minutes seemed to fly by. I was not sure I could tolerate the summer without her, and I longed for summer family camp in order to catch a glimpse of her again and spend some time with her. School ended in early June and family camp was the first week of July, and I could not wait for it to come.

I was so excited to see her at family camp until I met some friends that I tried to impress. I made some negative comments about her newly-permed hair (which, in my defense, was pretty awful), and I soon found myself being dumped beside the volleyball courts. I vowed that day that I would do everything in my power to win her back. I was willing to eat raw eggs and do one-arm push ups to win her back, and the next year I would get my chance. Rebekah took me back and we "dated" for another seven months, and I still was excited to see her everyday when I woke up for school. I wanted to whisk her away and marry her, but my income was relegated to cutting lawns which was not enough to finance our dream of a big family living in a house surrounded by a white picket fence. I felt at times that I glowed after speaking with her, but it was my oily acne teenage face that bore the shine.

When I was with Rebekah, I felt like I was on cloud nine, but I imagine Moses felt that much more deeply after spending quality time with God. If you spend forty days and forty nights with God, then your face will have no choice but to glow. Your life will never be the same and physical needs will be minimized as your real need for God is met. Moses spent time with God, and I am sure the forty days and nights seemed more like ten minutes to him. He met with the King of Kings, and was given the Ten Commandments that are still displayed in many churches, homes, and courthouses today. Moses had a glow about him that could only come after meeting with God. If you spend time with God, His light is sure to shine from you as well.

Where are you today friend? Do you spend time with God every day? Do you cherish your time with God more than you do your physical needs? Do people see God’s light in you? Do your actions prove that you are spending time with Him? Do you wake up in the morning excited to spend time with Him? May we cherish our time with God, and display the glow of time spent with Him. Life may bring about moments of happiness, but only God can give us real joy.
