“For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears [are open] unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.” I Peter 3:12
I remember in grade school when bullies ran the playground blacktop - usually the kid who flunked a grade and was held back. It helps to be a bully when you're 13 and in the fifth grade.
We had a bully at our school who also went to our church, so we had to contend with him six days out of the week. I learned quickly how to get on his good side, and I always tried to stay there. He was infamous for getting mad and swinging freely and he was bigger than all of us. If he was in a bad mood we knew to stay clear of him, and I always thought twice about picking my battles.
One day there was a nerdy kid in our class who disregarded the unwritten rules and angered the bully. The bully got up and approached him aggressively. The kid knew he had to act fast, so he threw a wayward punch that the bully dodged. He threw the punch so poorly that his arm went around the bully’s neck and accidentally became a headlock. He could not believe his good fortune as he jumped up and down for joy and his headlock grip became tighter. He was exclaiming his victory to the class as the bully's face slowly lost color. He was caught in a choke hold, and he was struggling to breathe. He could not fight back and his face had a look of panic on it. The teacher hurriedly ran over and entangled the mess before there was a homicide, and the bully collapsed to the floor gasping for breath. We cheered because he was alive but we also cheered because the bully was defeated. The bully was not quite the same from then on and he left the nerdy kid alone. Justice was served that day, and we all walked with a little pep in our step the rest of the year.
Sometimes we feel our bully Satan is going unchecked, and he seems to be having his way. It seems our prayers are not heard and that God has forgotten us...but this a lie of the Devil. God's eyes are over His people and His ears are open to them who follow Him. He has not forgotten your plight or the bully in your life, and He is aware of what you are going through. One day the Devil will be put in a headlock and cast into the Lake of Fire. He will not escape and he will not win, contrary to what he might say or how you may feel at times. You can rest assured that God is for the righteous, and He is against all who do evil and oppose Him.
Are you discouraged today? Do you feel God has forgotten you? Do you feel as though God is losing the battle in a world that is so lost? Have you come to truly know Romans 8:31, "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" Do you realize He is all you need? May we cast the burden of the bullies in our life on Him, and may we come to know that His ears are open to our prayers, It always pays to do what is right. May we find comfort in our Lord and may we always remember that a bully does not stand a chance against Almighty God.
Stay in the fight!
