No Goal!

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10

I was in the 10th grade when I started attending a new school, and I was excited at the new opportunities. The school I had attended since I was in kindergarten had shut down, and I was glad for the change. The new school had things my old school did not have, one of which was their own soccer field. Our soccer team the year before went defeated the whole season and we even forfeited our last game because our coach forgot we had a game scheduled. To this day, I am not sure if he truly forgot or simply had a selective memory due to our poor performance.

I was excited to be part of a new soccer team and our team was really good. We finished that year as the top team and the state championship seemed to be our destiny. I was running my mouth as to how good we were, and I felt like we could not be defeated. I was laser focused and refused to let "little" things like schoolwork detract me from my soccer goal.

I was out practicing corner kicks after practice one day when I saw the dean of students come out to speak to my coach. I was getting good at putting the corner kicks into the goal, and I was on fire that day. The tournament started later that week, and I was excited of what was to come. My coach finished talking to the dean and then came over to speak to me. He took his hat off and seemed to be pretty upset. He told me I was academically ineligible for the state playoffs, and I was crushed. I was failing English and I was failing my team.

Sure enough, the tournament came and I sat on the sidelines as my team played. Everyone asked me why I was not playing, and I seemed to shrink in stature every time I answered the question. My team lost the championship game and I was humbled and humiliated by the experience. I thought I was so good and my team was invincible, but I failed to remember what was important. I have never forgotten this time God used to humble me, and I vowed to never flunk English again.

In what area do you need humbling today? Are you one who quickly confesses your sin or do you think God will not notice? In what areas in your life have you lifted yourself up and forgotten about God? What has your pride cost you in your life? Isaiah 66:2b states, “but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” Do you come before God with a humble heart? Do you self-promote or do you come before God with a broken heart and bent knees? May we not forget our place and who we are, and may we allow God to promote us in His time and according to His will.

Stay in the fight! Saso
