Not My Sports!

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” I John 5:21

We took a trip to California in March to relax for a week and to celebrate the kid’s spring break. We didn’t realize how different things would become in the following weeks, and how much the world was already changing moment by moment. I was excited to get back from our vacation as my beloved ASU was about to play its first game in the Pac-12 tournament, or so I thought.

Breaking news was released every minute covering the impact of COVID-19, and the NBA canceled its season and other sports league soon followed. The Pac-12 tournament continued on for one day and then it too was cancelled. All college tournaments followed and the airwaves went blank with live sports coverage. There were no live sports to follow and the world was more concerned with the virus that was spreading like wild fire. The sports which I had previously found so important were not so important after all. None of my teams were playing anymore, and it made me ponder what truly was important in life.

Ever since I was old enough to read, I have been enamored with sports. I am a loyal fan of the Suns, Cowboys, Coyotes, Diamondbacks and my all-time love, the Arizona State Sun Devils. I have risen and fallen with the wins and losses and have invested hours of my life into sports. At times, I rushed to read the sports page before I read my Bible, and cared more about my teams than my spiritual walk. I made sports my idol and it detracted me from what really is important. The pandemic revealed to me that sports is not all that important, and I realized that sports was more important to me than it should have been.

Anything we put before God becomes an idol, and we must be careful on what we spend our time and whom or what we worship. Exodus 20:3 states, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” What are you putting before God today? Have you placed a person, thing or goal above your God? Are you keeping yourself from idols or are you entangled in the things of the world? May we abstain from that which keeps us from our God, and may we always keep Him above everything else. Sports, like all other earthly things, will fade away, but we will spend all eternity with our heavenly Father. Whom will you choose today - the Kings of Kings or that which is temporary?
