One Look

"Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied." Proverbs 27:20

I recently went to the gym with my daughter right after work, and the gym was full to capacity. We had plans later that night, so we thought we would get a workout in before the evening took over. When we got there, I found it hard to find a place to look. There were women who were dressed in quite revealing clothing and I had to look up at the ceiling at various times in order to not give way to my flesh. I almost had to ask Kate to lead me around like a blind man, and after having such a hard time finding a neutral place to look, I knew I would have to go to the gym at a different time than the after-work rush.

I am happily married, but this verse is true when it says the eyes of man are never satisfied just like hell and destruction are never full. I think back to the days when I thought there was nothing wrong with checking out the opposite sex as long as your wife did not catch you. I felt there was no harm in getting in a look as long as you were only looking and not touching. I have been like some men who need a neck brace after going to the mall with their heads snapping from one end to the other as someone attractive walks by. God's standard is not man's standard, and He desires that we be holy like He is holy. Matthew 5:28 states, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." The Devil knows all it takes is one look, and he can build on that one look to lead you down the path of destruction.

2 Samuel 11:2 states, "And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon." David's one look brought generational consequences, and a man after God's own heart was humiliated in his own country. David was not able to control his one look, so who are we to think we can? Proverbs 6:26 states, "For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life." The devil will use that one look to reduce you to a measly crust of bread, and he desires to ruin your family and the lives of others. He is a thief and a deceiver, and he will use lies to get you to think that a little look is harmless. I am guilty of looking twice when I should have looked away, and I know how Satan has used those thoughts against me. The Devil is our adversary and he is constantly on the prowl to tempt us and deceive us in order to ruin our lives.

Where are you today men? Does your neck hurt after going to a sporting event or the mall? Do you allow yourself to get a second or third look? If your wife were present would she smack you upside the head? I am preaching to myself as I write this and it is something I must guard myself against as well. We need God's help to be men of character and dignity, and we must ever be cautious of that one look that leads to destruction. Look up the sky if you must, and when you do, remember God is always watching even though your wife may not be.
