“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God. After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither (where) I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.” Leviticus 18:1-3
Things have really changed since I was a kid. I know there was sin around in my younger days, but it seems like it is now more out in the open. The sins people used to blush about have now lost their embarrassment. Shameful acts are now celebrated and there is no more “closet” as this lifestyle has now taken center stage. We are told by our society to be accepting of the sinful culture around us although it is contrary to God’s Word.
There is no doubt that we live smack dab in the world tarnished by sin, and it is evident that we have not arrived yet at our heavenly home. Around the world we see Christians who have paid the price for living for God as there is always a price to pay for doing right. Doing right is hard at the onset, but easy on the back end of it as you reap the consequences of good choices. We live in the world, but we are forbidden to be like the world.
1 John 2:15 states, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
I have been guilty of falling head over heels in love with the world only to find it brought me no joy or satisfaction, but instead brought hollowness, pain and anguish. The world offers a lot of promises but it never delivers on those promises. The foolish part is that I have fallen for this trap several times in my life, and I have fallen flat on my back just as Charlie Brown did every time Lucy pulled the ball from right underneath him. No matter how many times I have seen the trap, I seem to still fall for it.
God was well aware of where He placed the children of Israel, and it was not because He wanted them to be like the world. He gave them specific instructions of what they were to do and what they were not to do. The pleasures that Egypt offered were not to be partaken of as God knew it would corrupt His people. We are commanded in the same way as He knows the world will only bring about destruction. Proverbs 14:12 states, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death."
Which path are you on today? Are you following the ways of the world and going to places you ought not to go? Are you living as if God has not given you instruction? Are you dabbling in the things of a fallen world when God has commanded you to not walk that way? Are you still hoping to kick the world’s “football”, believing the lie that it will not be pulled from you this time? May we not follow after that which God has condemned but may we desire to be holy as He is holy. May God help us to be the light in this dark world, and may we avoid conforming to its sinful culture.
Stay in the fight!
