Redeemer

"Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people (his own special people), zealous of (for) good works." Titus 2:14

Redeemer is:

1. One who redeems or ransoms. One who buys back

2. The Savior of the world, JESUS CHRIST

On Fridays in our Freedom That Lasts program, we start every lesson with this truth: “Jesus Christ is the only source of freedom that lasts”. The first step in victory over sin is having your sins paid for by the Redeemer.

When I was in the eighth grade, we had someone new come to our Christian school. I attended a small school, so you always noticed someone new. He was quiet, friendly and bright, which was quite different than I was. We soon became friends and we welcomed him into our tight little group. Manuel was easy going but we soon discovered that he was not familiar with the God that we knew and believed in, and he always had questions after our weekly chapel services. He thought to get to heaven he had to do good works, and, in a sense, he was depending on himself to be his redeemer. After a couple of months, God started to work in his heart and after a chapel service, my friend accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. He now was ransomed from his sin and his eternal security was forever settled.

Manuel was always late to school. One Monday morning, he did not show up to school at his usually late time, and I figured he would be absent for the day as it was now lunch time, and he was never this late. I thought to call him when I got home when our principal entered our class and told us why he was not at school. My friend was in a hurry and on his way to school when his mom ran a red light and collided with a cement truck. They both were pronounced dead shortly after the accident with the only survivors being his little brother and sister who were seated in the back seat. The funeral was held for my friend and his mom in the same place where my friend had accepted Christ months earlier. In the service, with teary eyes and heavy hearts, our 7th and 8th grade class sang these words:

There is a redeemer Jesus, God's own Son Precious Lamb of God, Messiah Holy One

Jesus my redeemer Name above all names Precious Lamb of God, Messiah Oh, for sinners slain

When I stand in Glory I will see His face And there I'll serve my King forever In that Holy Place

I know, that on that tragic day, Manuel saw his Redeemer face to face as Job 19:25 assures us, “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: “

Where are you today friend? Are you trusting in yourself as your own redeemer? Are you hoping your good works outweigh your bad ones and the scales will tip in your favor, or are you trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ? Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, and my friend was only 13 years old when God decided to take him home. Is your eternity secured or does the thought of eternity trouble you? I pray today is the day you come to trust in Jesus Christ our Redeemer. He desires to redeem you today if you will put your faith and trust in Him. I am grateful for my Redeemer, and I look forward to the day I will see Manuel again.
