“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” II Peter 3:10
I was in my final semester of my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology, and I applied for an internship at the County Attorney’s office. I wanted an assignment in gangs or homicide, but I ended up in vehicular crimes. I was not overly excited to get this assignment but I determined to do my best in the situation. I had a desk near the front of the office and I was tasked to do everything no one else wanted to do. One of my jobs was to go the medical examiner's office and get photos of the deceased victims of vehicular crime. The photos would be compiled on a disc, and I would print them out and compile them in a case notebook.
I have always had a fascination with death and it seems to intrigue me. In the course of my internship, I saw many dead bodies: young, old and everything in between. I saw people who seemed in utter shock and some who looked to simply be sleeping. In reading the files, some were caught off guard with no idea of what was to come for them. There were cases of people partying and getting into cars and others just simply going to work or about their day, not knowing what would come next. In all cases, I am positive that no one thought this would be their last day on earth or they would never have gotten into a vehicle that day. A lot of these cases had me shedding tears, realizing that death is a surprise to many when it comes.
I think of this verse and the shock that will be upon the whole world when the day of the Lord comes. Matthew 24:36 states, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” The Lord will come unexpectedly as a a thief in the night, and will take the world by surprise. I am sure the newscasts will be flooded with elaborate stories about what has happened, and others will know the truth. The material things people held precious will not matter and there will be no more "keeping up with the Jones'".
When the day of the Lord comes, what category will you be in? Will you be shocked? Will you be terrified? Will you be left on earth or will He take you with Him? Are you ready for the day of the Lord? Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Will you be one He comes back for? In what or whom is your hope today? Are you putting your ambitions and goals into things that will just burn up one day? Do you long for the day that He will come back or does the thought of Christ's coming make you nervous? May we be ready when He comes again, and may we live like He is coming today.
Stay in the fight!
