The Beginning

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." Genesis 1:1-2

It was 1993 and my teenage Christmas list included clothes, a stereo, and countless other things I was hoping to get. I was excited as Christmas Day came and I could not wait to open my gifts under the tree. I started with my heaviest gift and much to my chagrin, it was a 150 piece Craftsmen mechanics tool set. I looked at the tool set with disappointment as I did not even know what many of them even did. My dad read my disappointment and told me I would one day come to appreciate that gift. I know I should have been grateful, but my dad had plenty of tools and I could always borrow his if I really wanted to. I moved on to my next gift hoping for something better, only to find that it was a nice toolbox in which to put my new tools. I struck out that day on my gifts, but I will say that my dad was right. I have come to love my toolbox and tools, and as the years go by, I continue to add to my collection.

Even though I have great tools, I am not the handiest guy in the world. I have trouble building and fixing things, and I would starve if I had to make a living by using my hands. I usually need someone to help get things started or pay them to do it in its entirety. I often become quite frustrated as I try to build things, and I typically turn a five minute project into a two hour endeavor.

God is not like me. Every new place I go, I am always amazed at His creation and the different landscape my eyes behold. I read these verses and I marvel at the handiwork of our God. God did not need Youtube how-to video or an instruction manual, but rather created the world out of nothing.

In the beginning, the world was empty, without form or light, and God created everything my eye can see and even the things my eye cannot see. I think of my life before God and how it was empty and without form. There was a void in me that only He could fill. He is the only One who could create the entire universe and create a new life in me. Only by His almighty, sanctifying work of grace can He create a new heart in me like David wrote in Psalms 51, "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

Do you believe that God created the heaven and earth? Do you take Him at His Word or do you seek for alternative ways to explain the creation of the world? Is your life without form and void? Do you seek to fill it with the things of this world when it can only be filled with Jesus Christ? What about you Christian? Do you realize the great God you worship? Do you worry about the things in life instead of trusting in the Creator of the world? May we pray for the Spirit of God to move upon our hearts and lives just as He moved upon the waters in the beginning. May we never take for granted our Creator, and may we ever praise Him that He is able to fill the void in our lives just as He did in the beginning. Praise be to our Creator and our Great God. Amen!
