The Bus Stop

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” James 4:17

I went to dinner with a friend from church and we enjoyed a good time of fellowship. When dinner finished, we went outside the restaurant to continue talking, and there was a group of people talking loudly at the bus stop nearby. We did our best to continue our conversation, but the noise of the bus stop was too great and we finally ended up just going our own separate ways.

I got into my car and I was in clear view of the bus stop. The Holy Spirit was nudging at my heart and telling me to give a gospel tract to those at the bus stop. I honestly was upset with how loud they were talking and some of the things they were talking about. I was faced with a dilemma like Jonah when he did not want to go to Joppa. I wrestled with the decision for quite some time but I reasoned within myself and did not obey the Holy Spirit. I turned my car on and drove away from the bus stop.

The moment I left, I knew I was wrong but I did not turn my car around to go back. Later that evening, I was ridden with guilt and I had to confess and make it right with God. I was unable to make it right with the people at the bus stop as they were long gone, and I missed my opportunity to be a witness for my God. I wish I could say that was the only time I failed, but there are countless other times when I knew to do better but I chose not to.

I know throughout our lives we are faced with similar crossroads. We walk by trash we should pick up, or we look the other way instead of helping someone who needs it. We think no one sees, but God is aware of our rebellion and disobedience.

Are there times in your life when you are neglecting the voice of the Holy Spirit? In what area do you know to do good but yet you choose to go on your way and ignore it? Who is God telling you to speak to today? Who in your life needs your help but yet you run like Jonah? May we be sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and may we obey immediately when we know to do good.

Stay in the fight!
