The Real McCoy

"For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." 2 Peter 1:16-17

I have been eyewitness to many amazing things in my life that if I told someone, they may not believe me. I have seen upsets in basketball, football, and I have seen games that broke my heart. I have been blessed to have a front row seat to some of these events, and there is nothing like being there live and seeing it for yourself. The crowd is electric and the energy is something that could not be accurately broadcasted even in 8K definition. I enjoy watching a game from the comfort of my home, but I would much rather be there in person to take it all in.

When I was a kid, my dad took our family and a friend of mine to the Phoenix Suns game one particular evening, Now, to give this a little bit of context, the Suns were not the hottest ticket in town, although they were the only ticket in town for professional sports. I loved the Suns, and I could hardly contain myself the day of the game as I was so excited and the time did not pass by fast enough. I brought my best friend to the game, and he got some unusual snacks from the snack bar and soon developed a stomachache. He was kind of a Debbie Downer, but I was not going to let him ruin my night. He remained quiet because of his stomachache, but many others at the game remained quiet as well because the Suns did not give us much to cheer about. The game ended, and I could not wait to make my way down to get some autographs.

In those days, if you wanted to get an autograph, you simply had to go where the players were parked or you could make your way down to the floor if they chose to hang around. I left my friend in the dust and made my way down to the floor. I was excited to get an autograph from whichever player was willing to sign my blank sheet of paper, but I really wanted to get one from my favorite, Mr. Larry Nance. I told my friend I would get him an autograph as well, but I soon forgot all about him as I was chatting away with the players on the floor. I got my autographs and excitedly made my way back to my friend, only to remember that I forgot to get him some autographs.

I could have given the autographs I had just gotten, but I was way too thoughtful of myself to allow that to happen. Instead, I promised him I would bring him the autographs to school the next day as I lied and told him I wanted to inspect them first. I got home and did my best to copy the autographs onto a clean sheet of paper, but my penmanship left a lot to be desired and it was clear that this was a forgery. My friends laughed me to scorn when the saw the counterfeit autographs, and they did not believe I got any autographs at all. I brought the real autographs to school the next day, but my friends would not be convinced due to my tomfoolery.

Although my friends did not believe me, I knew the autographs were legit because I was there and saw the players put ink to the piece of paper I had placed in front of them. The authentic autographs were not a fable or a made-up story, but they were the real McCoy. Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, did not have to be convinced about Jesus being the Messiah as he had seen Him with his own eyes, and he even heard the Father say, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." The world could say whatever they wanted, as they still do, but there was no denying to Peter how real God was to him. He experienced the majesty and greatness of God, and you could not convince him otherwise. Peter was coming to the end of his life, but he wanted this truth to be known by all who would listen. He did not need faith to believe because He had seen it, much like I saw the autographs go onto my piece of paper.

Do you doubt the existence of God? Do you have trouble seeing Him in the world around you, even though He is the One who hangs the stars in the sky? Will you put your faith and trust in Him? Will you believe without seeing Him? We may not be able to see Him physically, but there is no doubt that He exists. There is a God, and He is our Creator and the sustainer of all things. Whether or not we choose to believe, it does not change the fact that He is.
