The Time Is Now!

“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” Romans 13:11-14

On one hot summer day, my niece asked me if I would join her in a half marathon race. Since the event was to happen several months down the road, running this marathon did not seem unrealistic, so I agreed to do it. My calendar read “October” and the race was the second week of December. Great! I’d have plenty of time to get prepared.

I ran off and on over the following weeks but nothing to the point that prepared me for such an endeavor. As the truth began to set in that I was in no way ready, I tried to come up with excuses to get out of the run. However, I had given my word, and there was no turning back. December was fast approaching, so I determined to get serious about my training. Otherwise, I’d be in big trouble when the day of the race arrived. This isn’t the first time I’ve put things off until the last minute. I tend to wait much too long to do a thing, and it sometimes leads to my “demise”.

Today, I can’t help but think of the many years I’ve wasted pursuing worldly lusts and following my own will. Here is just one example. I thought my youth would last forever. Instead, the years flew by and suddenly it had dissipated before my eyes. I commonly said to myself, “tomorrow”, never realizing that today is almost always the best day to make changes. I began to realize that I was in a race, but I was not running it to please my Heavenly Father. I was chasing after my way, my goals, my ideas. I knew I had to make changes, and those changes needed to be now for tomorrow never comes! If I wanted to hear from my Lord, “Well done thou good and faithful servant,” I had better start moving today and get rid of excuses.

Where are you today, friend? Do you realize that today is the day to awaken out of your spiritual slumber? Do you realize every day that goes by is another day we draw closer to meeting our God? Do you realize the time is now and there is no time for waiting to do what is right? There is no time for us to waste on our fleshly desires and pursuits. Our lives are but a dash that lies between the years that we occupy planet earth and the day we meet our Lord. The time is short, and the time is now, to put on the Lord Jesus Christ. May we pursue the things that are eternal and lay aside that which will soon pass away.
