Thus Saith The Lord

"And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more."

Numbers 22:18

We lived in a world in which truth is subjective and everyone thinks they can arrive at their own “truth”. Christians know better as we have the Word of God, the source of truth. We don't have to lean on our own understanding because we have the Word of God to guide and direct us as we seek and learn the truth. Truth is not something I have of my own self, but it is something I get from the Word of God. If we are to be of help to others in any way, we must give people the truth of God's Word. I know that if I am not in the Word, then I will not have what I need to give others. I have no words of truth or hope in and of myself, but I do have the truth that God have given all of us.

I recently attended a camp service and the preacher said something I had not really heard so clearly before. He told the teenagers and all that were present that he did not want to give them advice from his perspective, but he wanted them to see it for themselves in the Word of God. He challenged the group to read along with him, and he challenged them to keep their Bibles open. He wanted them to get God's message to them and not his opinion or insight. I imagine most preachers desire this for their messages, but some start off this way and then find their way down a rabbit hole of their own opinions or pet peeves.

We need to hear from God, and we need to say what God has said. We are to not go in our own direction, but we should be concerned with the direction He has pointed us in. We are not to bend the truth or try to make the Bible say what it has not said. We will be held responsible for what we tell others about what God's Word says. You cannot go against His Word as many have tried, but He will always have the last word. I have seen a video of the Bible being kicked around on the ground by those who hold it in little regard, and I have heard others cite it as a fairytale book. God's Word is convicting, and as much as you may try to ignore it or act like it does not exist. it will stand for all eternity.

Balak, the Moabite king, wanted Balaam the prophet to give him a word that was not from God. He wanted words that he thought would be profitable to him. He wanted a blessing from God and a curse to God's people the Israelites. We are living in a similar society in which people want a word that is not from God, but a blessing on their sinful lifestyle. They want to live a life that has no negative consequences, and they want a “God” who will agree with their wicked lifestyle. Balaam knew there was no going against God and all the riches of this current world would not change “thus saith the Lord”.

Where are you today? Do you try to go against the Word of the Lord? Did you try to fit Him into your life or do you realize He is your life? Do you go against His Word or do you submit to what He says? Are you looking into and reading His truth or do you seek your own truth? May we not fool ourselves by thinking we can go against His Word, and may we be faithful in telling others about The Way, The Truth, and The Life.
