Walking In The Light

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.” Exodus 13:21-22 I cannot remember too much prior to my salvation, but I do know what it‘s like to be in a dark place. As a Christian, I have been in dark places where I was lost and did not have a plan to get out. It was not that I lacked knowledge, but it was more of my failure to apply the knowledge I already had. I knew the truth, but yet chose to believe the lies of the devil. I had the Light of the World inside of me, but I chose the dark paths of sin. There is nothing like walking in the light, and when you walk in the light, it is hard to stumble. I John 1:7 explains it like this, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” My daughter Lanie came down one summer on a break from college, and she wanted to get out of the valley heat. We decided to go to Flagstaff and check out the lava tubes nestled in the Coconino Forest. I had never been there before so I was excited to see what it was all about. We drove out there to the entrance of the tubes, kind of hidden away there in the forest. I had a head lamp in my truck that I pulled out to use for the hike down into the tubes. As we looked down into the cave-like tube, cool air was seeping out of the top. I didn’t realize how dark it would be until we climbed down into it, and soon I could not see my hand in front of my face.

I used my phone’s flashlight to shed some light into the darkness but it was still pretty dark, and I was only able to see one step in front of the other. There were parts inside the cave where the ceiling was low, but my short stature does have its benefits. As we finished our excursion a couple hours later, we could see the light coming from the opening, and I was relieved we had made it through. The light was a welcome change to the darkness, and I no longer feared stumbling and falling. Light is a beautiful thing, and you don’t quite appreciate it until you are in utter darkness. The children of Israel were led by God through a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. The cloud gave them direction and the pillar of fire guided them and lighted their way in the dark night. It is an amazing thing when you follow God, but it is a terrible thing when you go off the path and into the darkness. It doesn’t take much to get us off of on a dark path, and it often starts with us neglecting our time in the Word of God, and we become spiritually starved. Psalm 119:105 states, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” If you do not know Jesus Christ, then you are in darkness. You can pursue the things of this world, but it will only lead to more stumbling in the darkness. Only the Light of the World, Jesus, can bring about true light, and He desires to lead you if you will follow Him. John 8:12 promises, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” If you want to know more about Jesus, please reach out to me. I’d love to share with you the good news of my Savior. How about you Christian? Have you stepped out of the light and into the darkness of the world? Are you pursuing that which is contrary to the light? Do you seem lost and feel miserable due to your sinful choices? Will you submit yourself to God, so that He may lead you? God’s light will lead you if you will only trust and obey. May we walk in the light as He is in the light, and may our light shine and point others to the One who is the source of our light. I John 1:5 states, “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” Stay in the fight! Saso
