Warning Signs

”And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.” Exodus 5:1-2 Rebekah and I went to visit my parents when they still lived in Chicago, and my dad decided he would take us to Niagara Falls. The drive was only about eight hours from their house, and we were quite excited to go. My parents had been there before but this would be our first time. It was late in the winter, so there was still a chill in the air. We arrived on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and it was quite beautiful and not really something you can fully describe. We were in awe at the sheer vastness of the falls and how pretty it was to see in person. At night, the falls were illuminated with various colors and it was so beautiful and quite romantic. We crossed the border into the American side of the falls and spent the night not too far from the falls. We woke up the following day and explored the falls even more. I noticed signs that warned to not get into the water because you would soon be headed to the falls as the water naturally flowed in that direction. My stomach became nervous as my mind raced with the possibility of being out in the water and swept over the enormous falls. There was no fence or gate to prevent swimmers, and you could go out into the water if you really chose to. I am no adrenaline junkie, so I stayed a healthy distance away. As you get nearer the falls, there is a final sign again warning visitors of the danger. An estimated 20-30 people die each year at the falls, sadly, mostly due to suicides. I am sure they saw the signs but they made the decision to ignore them and enter into the falls anyway to their own demise. I am terrified of heights, and I cannot imagine choosing those last dangerous moments as my last. I think of Moses here as he went before Pharaoh and asked him to let God’s people go, so that they could hold a feast to Him in the wilderness. Pharaoh held little regard for the LORD because he did not know who He was and did not know the great I AM. He did not seek to know more about Almighty God, but just dismissed this as a novel request. He ignored the warning signs of what his disobedience would bring, and did not realize ignoring this request would bring him much pain and ultimately death. We know who the Lord is, but yet we act like we do not. We live our lives ignoring the warning signs, and we live dangerously close to the end of the falls until we succumb to our demise. We ignore the still small voice, and go on living as if His voice does not matter. Where are you today, friend? Do you know who the Lord is? Have you obeyed His voice and call? Do you live your life your own way, ignoring the voice of the Lord? Do you heed the warnings He has given you in His word, or do you meddle with one foot in the dangerous waters? May we know the voice of our God, and may we obey His voice and heed the warnings He has given us. Pharaoh had the chance to know God, but chose rather to dismiss Him. John 10:27 states, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” May we obey the voice of our Good Shepherd, and may we carefully avoid the pitfalls of sin. Warning signs are given for a reason, and may we obey the signs before we fall to our demise. Stay in the fight! Saso
