What A Friend!

And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” Genesis 5:22-24

I grew up with someone whose birthday was the day after mine. We lived about a half a mile from each other, and were close friends from as young as I can remember. We shared ideas, thoughts, and even liked girls in the same family. We hung out at school, church and at each other’s houses. We were inseparable at times and we enjoyed a lot of the same things.

He was close to me like a brother and there is not much I wouldn’t have done for him. If someone wanted to mess with him, then they would have to go through me first. In our junior year, he drove us to school and we got really close that year. We talked about school, sports and our love interests. It got to the point where we could almost finish each other’s sentences. If someone knew me, they knew about him. We hung out and talked all the time, and there was not many secrets we had from each other. I thought we would always be close, but it was not to be.

We did not have a big fight or anything that would cause us to separate, but after high school, I moved away from Arizona and the distance was too great for our friendship to survive. People grow and move on, and it seemed in the four years I was gone, things changed and we were not as close as we used to be. Long-distance phone calls were 15 cents a minute in those days, so I did not call him too often. It bothered me for some time that we did not remain as close as we once were, but sometimes people grow in different directions. The friendship we thought would last forever did not, although I would still be there for him if he needed something or called on me. I would like to say we never fought or had disagreements, but we fought plenty over the years and disagreed about a lot of things.

I think of Enoch and how he walked with God. Enoch must have done right and been pleasing to God as Amos 3:3 states, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” People who knew me knew my friend because we were inseparable, and people who knew Enoch knew God because he walked with God. I can think of no greater testimony than for someone to say, “Saso walks with God.” I can think of no better way to exit this world than to have God just grab me and carry me home. What a closeness they must have shared! God did not allow Enoch to die like others, but simply one day he was there and the next day he was not. God took His friend home and I can strongly assume they remain close to this day.

Where are you today friend? Are you a friend of the most High? Do you walk with God or do you go your own way? Does He know you by name or will He say to you as quoted in Matthew 7:22-23, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” There is no greater friend you can have in this world but God Almighty. There is no greater person I would rather walk with than Him. Do you please God as Enoch did? Hebrews 11:5 states, “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” What is your faith in today? Is it in Almighty God or some other thing or person you are hoping in? May we walk with God as Enoch did, and may our hope be in the Friend that sticks closer than a brother.

Stay in the fight!

Saso

I’ve Found a Friend, Oh, Such a Friend

James Grindlay Small

I’ve found a Friend, oh, such a Friend!

So kind, and true, and tender,

So wise a Counsellor and Guide,

  So mighty a Defender!

From Him who loves me now so well,

What power my soul can sever?

Shall life or death, or earth or hell?

  No, I am His forever.
