What Did Jesus Pray For?

And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.”

John 17:11-12

I have prayed for many things in my life spanning from getting an A on a test I didn’t study for to seeing people I care about getting saved. We make prayer lists and ask others to pray for us as our needs are great. I get asked on a daily basis to pray for others, and I feel the great privilege and responsibility of that. We are human and frail in nature, needing constant prayer moment by moment. In comparison to our prayers, what would Jesus have prayed for?

Jesus was all man in the flesh, but all God as well while He walked this earth. He needed the strength of His Father and would often get away to spend time with Him alone. He had physical needs, but I wonder as I read these verses, what would be on Jesus' prayer list? What would be the things Jesus would ask His Father for?

Jesus prayed, “that they (His followers) may be one, as we are.” Jesus desired for us to have what He enjoyed with His Heavenly Father. He asked that we would be one as He was one with the Father. He wanted us to experience the closeness of the relationship He had with the Father, the talks they shared, the amazing love, and the wisdom that fueled His earthly ministry.

Can you imagine the great love of Jesus that He would desire for us what He so enjoyed with His Father? His request was unselfish and His request was for us. He offered this request to God the Father who loved the Son before the foundation of the world, and who would also want us to share in that same love and oneness.

Friend, where are you today? Are you taking advantage of the oneness Jesus prayed that you would have? Are you pursuing our Heavenly Father with the access Jesus has given you? Are you pursuing Him as Jesus pursued Him? Do you look forward to spending time with Him? May we desire to be one with Him, just as Jesus prayed.
